About Us - Note Reading
Our Vision
To democratize music learning by making sheet music reading accessible, fun and effective for everyone, regardless of their economic background or geographic location.
The Story Behind Our Project
Note Reading was born from a personal need that grew into a passion for sharing knowledge. Like many self-taught musicians, we faced the barrier of learning to read sheet music without access to formal music education.
Music is a universal language, but its written notation is often perceived as a code only professional musicians can access. That perception isn't just incorrect — it also keeps many talented people from accessing the rich tradition of written music.
It all started from the frustration of not being able to remember musical notes well enough to read the sheet music of my favorite songs and try to play them on the piano.
Tired of not being able to remember the notes, I researched whether any tool could help me learn them in a simple way. Since I'm a programmer by training, I decided the best way to learn was to build an app that would help me learn them.
Eventually I decided to build the tool I wished I'd had to learn and memorize the notes. The idea was to make it like a game so it would be fun and easy to use, both on a computer and on a phone.
The app finally launched. We consulted with music teachers and students to understand their real needs, and I iterated on the design while adding new features.
After a fascinating round of user research, I shipped the app with full features: multiple practice modes, different clefs, notation systems, and ear training. All completely free.
Our Mission
Make music education accessible to everyone. We firmly believe that learning music shouldn't be limited by economic, geographic or social barriers. Our tool is designed to be completely free and accessible from any device with an internet connection.
Beyond simply teaching note identification, we want to inspire a deeper understanding of music. Every note you correctly identify brings you closer to enjoying the vast library of written music humanity has produced over the centuries.
Our Core Values
Quality Education
We apply proven pedagogical principles and effective learning methodologies in every aspect of our platform.
Universal Accessibility
We design with users of different backgrounds, devices and technical skill levels in mind.
Fun Learning
Gamification isn't just entertainment — it's a powerful tool to keep motivation high and accelerate learning.
Measurable Progress
We provide clear feedback and a tracking system so you can see your continuous improvement.
Privacy and Security
We respect your privacy and keep your data safe. We only collect information needed to improve your experience.
Continuous Innovation
We listen to our community and constantly evolve to deliver the best learning experience.
The Problem We Solve
Traditional music education, while valuable, presents several challenges in the modern world:
- High cost: Private music lessons can be prohibitively expensive for many families.
- Geographic limitations: Not every community has access to qualified music teachers.
- Rigid schedules: Traditional classes require specific time commitments that not everyone can keep.
- One-size-fits-all pace: Traditional methods often follow a standard pace that can be too slow or too fast for individual students.
- Lack of targeted practice: Many methods don't provide enough focused practice in fast note recognition.
Our solution addresses each of these points, offering an alternative that complements (not replaces) traditional music education.
Our Pedagogical Approach
Progressive Learning
We structure learning in logical stages that let students build confidence before tackling more complex challenges. We start with foundational concepts and gradually introduce more advanced elements like accidentals and different clefs.
Spaced Repetition
We use spaced-repetition principles to ensure information transfers effectively to long-term memory. Our game system is designed to reinforce concepts at optimal intervals.
Multimodal Learning
We recognize that people learn in different ways. That's why we integrate visual and auditory elements into our platform. Students can see notes, hear them, and physically interact with the interface.
Immediate Feedback
We provide instant, specific feedback for every answer. This immediate feedback is crucial for effective learning, allowing quick corrections and reinforcing correct behavior.
Our Commitment to the Community
We're not just software developers — we're musicians, educators, and people passionate about democratizing knowledge. Every line of code is written with a deep understanding of the challenges music students face.
We maintain an active commitment to our user community. We read every email, consider every suggestion, and ship improvements based on real needs voiced by our users.
Transparency in Development
We believe in transparency. Our development decisions are guided by usage data (always anonymous and consented), pedagogical research, and direct user feedback. We don't ship features just because they sound good — we ship them because they solve real problems.
The Impact We Aim For
Our success isn't measured only in user numbers, but in real impact on people's lives. Every message we get from someone who can finally read their first sheet of music, every story of a child discovering their passion for music, every adult fulfilling a dream of learning music — these are reminders of why we do this.
Long-Term Goals
- Help 100,000 people learn basic music reading
- Expand to multiple languages to reach global audiences
- Develop partnerships with schools and educational organizations
- Build additional resources for music teachers
- Research and document the effectiveness of our methods
Technology in Service of Education
We use modern web technology to create an experience that works seamlessly on any device. Our approach isn't to impress with technology for its own sake, but to use the most appropriate tools to create the best possible educational experience.
Technical Principles
- Simplicity: Clean interfaces that don't distract from learning
- Speed: Fast load times so the study flow isn't interrupted
- Reliability: Consistent functionality across different devices and browsers
- Offline-first: Basic functionality available even with imperfect connectivity
Sustainability and the Future
We keep this project free through ethical, non-intrusive monetization methods. Our sustainability model is designed to ensure we can keep improving and maintaining the platform without compromising our educational mission.
We believe education is a fundamental right, not a privilege. That's why we commit that the core learning features will always remain free and accessible to everyone.
We also use the most efficient and sustainable technologies to keep the platform running and minimize environmental impact.
